The past few days I have been feeling progressively worse and worse. If it wasn't enough that my teeth have been aching after my fillings, now when I wake in the morning it feels as if I hadn't slept at all. My lungs feel heavy and my throat feels...odd. Im so tired of chewing on aspirins that I had rather just be in discomfort for a few hours. A trip to the campus clinic is an option, other than I am convinced that most physicians really don't have a clue as to what is ailing us. Maybe that was a little too harsh...
At least getting sick has caused me to have some pretty fantastic dreams. A few nights ago I dreamed that my boyfriend and I were walking along the shoreline of a dark, mysterious ocean. As we looked over the water we saw an enormous manta ray leaping out of the black water. It kept beaching itself, so he and I had to rescue it. Then last night there was an impending doom for mankind. The world was about to face a great extinction, and there was little that we could do about it. Everyone walked about town, trying not to talk about the unavoidable truth.
Anyways, last night I paid eight bucks for a drink in Dallas. That was pretty much the end of the night; plans to go back into Denton and dance to some 80's music were abandoned.

J'ai vingt-quatre ans.

Birthday parties are an interesting concept, especially for young adults such as myself. Around this time we harken back to our old birhtday parties from simpler times; times when a dinosaur-shaped cake or a room full of balloons was all we needed (and perhaps a "Little Mermaid" play-set). Some of us try to relive that care-free spirit of our younger days by dressing up as kitty cats and getting silly drunk on free alcohol while dancing to some Michael Jackson. I was fortunate enough to do just that AND get a birthday cake out of it all (although not dinosaur-shaped, but I can learn to forgive).
Its not that I am afraid that I am getting a little older, its just that 24 sounds awfully official. Well, Im excited really. There are going to be many drastic changes in my world. Graduation looms near on the horizon, all the while I am absorbing as much of this silly town that I can...because it will be a bittersweet goodbye. But then again, this is a transitional town. The kids here know that their stay here has an expiration date, and if they linger too long they will see that they will keep growing up while Denton forever celebrates its 21st birthday.

You ever hear a song that makes you think of some of your happiest moments? Its funny how those sounds can trigger a chemical reaction for nostalgia.

Well, I am finally reunited with my tiny apartment back in Denton. Its always refreshing to come back to my little niche and see my few friends again. Perhaps what excited me the most was having access to my closet again! I have been living in a suitcase for about a month now, so the moment I got home I played dress-up in-between commercials while watching 24. Hopefully tonight will prove to be an evening of reunions and laughter...most likely with the company of booze.
Speaking of friends, I have the best ones a girl could ask for. My best buddy Brian bought me a domain name for Christmas, www.maryelam.com . So, this means I have my very own website! There isn't anything on it as of yet, but I will use it as a digital portfolio/contact info for my future career as a photographer. Exciting!

Back in the habit like "Sister Act II"

Well, guess who got a new DSLR camera...give up? ME!! It was an early birthday present/belated Christmas gift from my parents. It feels like I have been living with one of my arms amputated, and now by the miracle of modern science I have had it reattached. I've been snap-happy all day, photographing my cats and parents. The occasion was special enough for me to get all dressed up and have my mother take a photo of my by her beautiful vintage bar. She made me a brandy and coke with a little cherry. Smashing. To the new year, my friends. Let us turn our faces toward the sun, keep our hands busy, our hearts warm, and our minds clear.
